The American Society of Landscape Architect’s and allies will hold another nationwide public awareness and outreach day on April 26th 2012 at noon revolving around a public health and active living theme. On this day, it is our opportunity to demonstrate how landscape architects have contributed to the health and well-being of the general public by providing outdoor recreational opportunities and spaces that engage the human spirit and get people moving.
The San Diego Chapter will participate in the day by encouraging people to get out and walk on their lunch break and encourage people to attend one of four guided walks narrated by a landscape architect – you! They will also be compiling a general booklet of maps showing trails and walks designed by landscape architects, or walk to significant destinations designed by landscape architects, or walks demonstrating design ideas such as complete streets. This booklet will be published on their website for the general public to reference.
The chapter has already contacted Walk San Diego (http://www.walksandiego.org/) They are interested in a collaboration and will host a walk. They’re also planning to reach out to healthcare centers and sites in San Diego to attempt to get the word out to the general public.
Walk it out in your community or just do what works as you all did on 08.17.11. Keep it simple. The collective actions of many add up to the whole.
